Q1    A 22 mm diameter, 300 mm long low carbon steel tension rod is subjected to an axial tensile load of 30 kN. The modulus of elasticity (E) for the steel is 210 GN/m2.

    i)    Calculate the tensile stress set-up in the tension rod. [3]
ii)   Determine the extension of the rod due to the applied force. [3]
iii)  If a temperature change of 45oC takes place, calculate the free thermal expansion of the bar if the coefficient of linear expansion is 12x10-6/oC. [3]

Q2    A simply-supported beam ABCDE is supported at A and E and is loaded at B, C and D as shown in Figure Q2(a). The beam has the cross-section shown in Figure Q2(b).

    i)    Calculate the magnitude of the reactions at A and E [4]
ii)   Sketch the shear force and bending moment diagrams for the beam, indicating all significant values. [6]
iii)  Determine the coordinates of the beam cross section centroid. [3]
iv)  Determine the second moment of area about the neutral axis (NA) XX for the beam cross-section. [3]
    v)  Determine the maximum bending stress set-up in the beam. [2]
