Referencing is one of the most noticeable and most important characteristics of academic writing. 00:00:09.233 --> 00:00:13.099 It enables students to demonstrate their depth of understanding on a particular topic and 00:00:13.100 --> 00:00:21.133 means academic writing is based on fact rather than opinion. 00:00:21.166 --> 00:00:23.999 Why does it matter? Referencing is an academic convention that means essays and 00:00:24.000 --> 00:00:30.100 assignments are based on theory, research and policy. 00:00:30.966 --> 00:00:38.966 It allows students to demonstrate knowledge, understanding and awareness of important issues in their area of practice. 00:00:38.966 --> 00:00:42.966 It's important to take a critical approach to evaluating evidence- 00:00:42.966 --> 00:00:46.966 not everything you read will be relevant or rigorous. 00:00:46.966 --> 00:00:50.966 It's also important to reference to show what has influenced your thinking and 00:00:50.966 --> 00:00:53.132 safeguard against plagiarism. 00:00:53.133 --> 00:01:01.133 How do I do it? The best place to start is to look at the resource list for your module. This will point you towards useful introductory texts. 00:01:01.133 --> 00:01:05.766 Use these resources to help formulate questions about your topic- Where are the gaps? 00:01:05.766 --> 00:01:09.966 What more do you need to know? 00:01:09.966 --> 00:01:17.166 These questions will help shape your search terms and the resources you use. 00:01:17.166 --> 00:01:21.166 How do I do it? There's lots of great information on the GCU Library site about finding resources online. 00:01:21.166 --> 00:01:25.166 Look under the Subject help menu for Essential Search Skills and Resources. 00:01:27.166 --> 00:01:32.899 Make notes when you are reading on which aspects of a book, journal paper or website you find useful for your assignment. 00:01:35.166 --> 00:01:40.366 Will you be referring to a theory, piece of research, statistic or recommendation, for example? 00:01:43.166 --> 00:01:47.166 Will you be using a direct quote ( that is, where you use an author's words exactly)? 00:01:47.166 --> 00:01:51.166 If so, remember to write down the page number. 00:01:53.000 --> 00:01:58.233 As these notes evolve they can help you plan your assignment as well as build up your reference list. 00:01:58.233 --> 00:02:03.833 Different referencing systems. The full reference in a reference list or bibliography at the end of the essay: 00:03:12.800 --> 00:03:16.800 e.g. COOPER, N. 2009. Interdisciplinary project management. London: Routledge. 00:03:16.800 --> 00:03:21.166 In text examples: You can vary the way you incorporate references in your writing: 00:03:21.166 --> 00:03:25.199 Reflective writing encourages students and practitioners to examine their critical decision-making (Ryan, 2011.) 00:03:25.200 --> 00:03:31.600 Ryan (2011) suggests that reflective writing encourages students and practitioners to examine their critical decision-making. 00:03:33.766 --> 00:03:39.032 According to Ryan ( 2011, p.28) "reflective practice is a lifelong learning system that ensures continuous improvement". 00:03:39.033 --> 00:03:41.866 The page number is required for a direct quote. 00:03:41.866 --> 00:03:44.432 Reference list examples.
