Summary:	Dr Aaron Reeves, post-doctoral researcher at Oxford University delivers this lecture on the impact recession and austerity have on health. His work looks at the relationship between politics, economics, society and specifically how these three things impact health. He talks about the evidence which shows recessions harm health but that austerity exacerbates the impact of the recession; suicide, HIV and Aids rates increase in some countries, mental health general deteriorates and people struggle to access health care they desperately need. He talks about austerity making this worse as it hurts the most vulnerable by removing the support and protection from the economic shock of the recession. In this lecture, Dr. Reeves puts forward the case that austerity does harm health but that is a choice we make and we can change how our governments respond to the recession and recessions in the future.
