Summary: | Jerry Goldman is a professor in the Department of Political Science at Northwestern University (Evanston, Illinois) his professional specialization is to the study of the US Supreme Court. He has been a pioneer in the creation and use of digital multimedia for teaching and research. His initial project "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the U.S. Supreme Court" has developed (with substantial support from the National Science Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities) into the award-winning OYEZ Project (www.oyez.org) His collaboration with Jeffrey Berry and Kenneth Janda The Challenge of Democracy: Government in America (Houghton Mifflin, 1987-2005) has created the dominant textbook in the field. Its powerful thematic structure and engaging software reaches thousands of college students each year. In its 8th edition and has been translated into four languages with a Russian edition in preparation. Goldman has been the recipient of numerous awards for his pioneering efforts as a teacher/scholar. In 1992, he was appointed the first Charles Deering McCormick Chair of Teaching Excellence at Northwestern University. In 1997, he received the EDUCOM Medal for his work in the use of computing in higher education within political science. In 1998, he received the American Bar Association's Silver Gavel Award for his contributions to public understanding of law. He has won four awards from the American Political Science Association for his software development projects. His most recent honour, in 2004, was the Teaching and Mentoring Award from the Law and Court Section of the Association. Professor Goldman has had an association with Glasgow Caledonian since the early 1990s when he gave a seminar entitled "Why not just use paper?". He is a Principal Investigator on the Spoken Word an international collaboration in the JISC / NSF programme Digital Libraries in the Classroom. The partners, Glasgow Caledonian and the BBC in the UK with Michigan State and Northwestern in the USA, have a $2.5 million + five year project to integrate spoken word audio form remote digital libraries into learning and teaching in their own and other institutions. His inaugural lecture will consider some issues relating to the use of web-based tools with spoken audio and will demonstrate some of the techniques and approaches being developed in the project. |
