Summary: | Recall that research can be defined as: "A process of investigation leading to new insights, effectively shared" This is quite a simple, concise statement. However, behind this very broad definition lies a large range of reasons and motivations for doing research, types of research, and methods of carrying out that research. Research and academic disciplines Research is important in pretty much any academic discipline, but the nature of that research often differs between disciplines. A researcher in, for example, medicine is likely to work very differently from a researcher in physics, or in psychology, and so on: Medical researcher may do clinical trials to find out about the effectiveness of treatments or drugs Physicist may make precise measurements of physical phenomena to test the correctness of theoretical predictions Psychologist may do experiments involving people to learn about the processes of the human mind. |
