Summary: Glasgow Caledonian University was pleased to welcome Dr Mary Robinson, the former President of Ireland and former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, to present the 2011 Magnusson Lecture. ‘Climate Justice – Challenges and Opportunities’ addressed climate change, which Dr Robinson believes is a serious threat from the world’s wealthiest nations to the human rights of those in the world’s poorest countries. Explaining the concept of climate justice, Dr Robinson said “Climate justice lies at the nexus of climate change and human rights and seeks to focus on what impacts climate change has on the most marginalised and disenfranchised in our global community. “The lens of climate justice brings what can be an abstract or abstruse phenomenon into sharp and immediate focus and illuminates the real human face of suffering and devastation wrought by climate change.” The recipient of numerous honours and awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Obama, Dr Robinson is also a member of the Elders and is President of the International Commission of Jurists. Dr Robinson serves as a member of a number of boards, including the European Climate Foundation and is chair of the Institute of Human Rights and Business. The lecture was followed by a Q&A session hosted by television presenter Sally Magnusson.
