1 file in this resource
Summary: | Professor Umut Korkut, of Glasgow School for Business and Society, will deliver his inaugural Professorial Lecture on Tuesday, February 11. The lecture will look at how new nationalist movements across the world exploit insecurities to make individuals and the public feel more comfortable and how this form of nationalism can be challenged. Just like its predecessor, new nationalism is based on a series of myths and feeds off the alienation that individuals feel, guests will hear. Professor Korkut said: "The purveyors of new nationalism exploit public myths, folk beliefs, and shared insecurities. “Those attending will hear how new nationalism can be challenged through everyday politics and the forces of democracy. "We need alternative progressive platforms that counter the alienation that our peers face." This lecture will appeal to anyone interested in identity, macro politics of governance, and trends in western democracies. Professor Umut Korkut is currently leading three EU-funded projects at Glasgow Caledonian University into mass migration, integration, democracy and populism. An expert on Hungarian and Turkish politics, he writes across various themes central to European politics, including political regime change, gender and migration. |
